Ask a Scientist – Mapping our Galaxy Far, Far Away

July 10, 2020 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Will Armentrout is an astronomer at the Green Bank Observatory, a
National Science Foundation facility nestled deep in the West Virginia
mountains in the National Radio Quiet Zone. Will is originally from Ford
City, Pennsylvania, and received his Bachelor of Science in Physics from
Westminster College in 2012 and his masters and PhD in Physics from West
Virginia University in 2018. His research focuses on high-mass star
formation across the Milky Way, including work on the most distant known
spiral arm in the Galaxy, the Outer Scutum-Centaurus Spiral Arm. He uses
radio telescopes like the Green Bank Telescope and the Very Large Array to
map out the Milky Way and help us understand how the biggest, brightest,
hottest stars in our Galaxy are created.
