The AMOS STEAM Lab can be utilized as a lunch space following a group’s field trip by request. Due to fire safety protocol, this lunch space is only available to groups smaller than 50 students, the exception being Tuesdays from September to May (When AMOS is closed to the public). 

Groups will not have access to refrigerators, microwaves, or kitchens. Lunch boxes will be stored in a central location for the duration of the programing then retrieved by students for lunch. If the temperature of student’s lunches is a priority, we recommend bringing a cooler which can be placed alongside the student’s belongings. 

Teachers can choose to let students shop in our Museum Store during their visit. Prices start with items at $0.50 (plus tax). Please let us know if you want time for your students to shop in advance so that we can include it in the visit itinerary. Teachers with valid ID receive a 10% discount in our store.

AMOS field trips have a minimum capacity of 15 students, if less students than 15 attend, the booking party will still be billed the minimum cost of $180.00. 

Outreaches (school visits) have a minimum capacity of 5 participants and are subject to the flat rate prices outlined above. 

AMOS Field Trips are split into three sizes, 

Small Group, Large Group, and Extra-Large Group. 

Small groups (44 students or under) may choose to do one program, or a two-program package.

Large Groups (45-66 students) must do a two-program package. Due to space constraints at AMOS, larger groups require us to rotate groups through programming and the museum to keep the museum running smoothly and all parties safe. The price of large group two-program packages are discounted to reflect this need. 

Extra-Large Groups (67-88 students) are only able to book Tuesdays from September through May, when AMOS is closed to the public. Extra-large groups must also select a two-program package, due to space constraints in our museum. The price of large group two-program packages is discounted to reflect this need. 

*If a Tuesday will not work for your Extra-Large group, we may be able to accommodate half of your group in the morning and a second half in the afternoon. Please reach out to [email protected] to discuss options. 

Discounted pricing is offered on a limited basis to those schools that qualify as Title I schools and need financial support for students who may not be able to attend a field trip. Please contact [email protected] for details.

Unloading: Please turn right, onto Church Street (perpendicular to our front entrance), and pull over immediately after turning, to unload. Please wait for a museum staff member to come out to the bus, before unloading. We will assist with crosswalk crossing. Please have a final head count ready, broken into the following categories: Students, Staff and Chaperones.

Parking: For large vans and buses, please refer to our AMOS Field Trip Parking document. Cars and small vans are recommended to park in the Rankin St. Garage. The first hour is free.

Our Hurricane Simulator is an exhibit and costs an extra $2.00, paid into the simulator with dollar bills or credit cards. We recommend no more than 2-3 children at one time.

The schedule of an AMOS field trip is dependent on the size of the group, and your chosen arrival time, but the example schedules below are meant to give you a general idea of what your trip may look like. 

Example: Asheville Elementary School (40 Students)

10:00AM: Arrival- Asheville Elementary arrives by bus and is dropped off at the designated drop off zone on Church St. AMOS staff help the group cross Patton Ave. safely.

10:05AM: Welcome and introduction to the museum, as well as a brief rundown of our museum rules. 

10:10 AM: Half of the group heads onto the exhibit floor and checks out the museum, the other half head into the STEAM Lab for their programming. 

10:50: The two groups switch after 40 minutes. 

11:30: Asheville Elementary chooses to utilize our optional lunch period (available to schools with groups under 50 students). During this time, the primary contact is invited to pay for the trip at the front desk.

12:00: Departure- Students use the bathroom and depart the museum, aided by AMOS staff who help them safely cross the street back to the designated pickup/dropoff zone.
