Summer Science Camp Counselor (Seasonal/Temporary)

Position type: Seasonal, camps Mon-Fri June 15-August 7 with training times prior to camp start date. Required counselor training will be held from 4:30 – 7:30 on June 8 and 10 and from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm on June 13.
All counselors will work at least 5 out of the 8 weeks of camp.

Explore, Play, and Learn! The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) is a growing local science museum with interactive, hands-on exhibits for science lovers of all ages! We are Western North Carolina’s home for experiential science learning, discovery, and exploration. Young learners ages 5-11 will especially enjoy our exhibits and programs that spark the imagination, fuel a passion for experimentation, and foster lifelong curiosity. 

Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) offers full-day hands-on science camps for children who will be entering grades K-5 in the fall. The camp season runs from June 15-August 7 at the museum.

Summer 2026 Weekly Themes

1 – 6/15-19 – Paleontology and Archaeology
2 – 6/22-26 – Tinkering Workshop
3 – 6/29 – 7/3 – Space Explorers
4 – 7/6-10 – The Natural World
5 – 7/13-17 – The Art of Science I
6 – 7/20-24 – Chemistry
7 – 7/27-31 – Forces and Energy
8- 8/3-7 – The Art of Science II

Camp Schedule Includes

Exploring the museum (tree climb, scavenger hunts, river table, and more)
Tinkering challenges (building creative solutions to fun problems)
Camp songs and games (yes, you’ll be singing and being a little silly!)
STEAM stations (hands-on crafts with a STEAM twist)
Themed STEAM activities (led by AMOS STEAM educator/guest presenter)
Field trips to walkable downtown locations (playground, splash pad, museums, etc)

We’re looking for experienced educators as well as high school and college students who enjoy working with campers, bring great energy, and want to make a positive impact—all while having a great time.

Requirements

Counselors should have experience working with children. This could be working at other camps, volunteering at other organizations, babysitting, etc.
Must be at least 15 years old.
CPR and first aid training strongly preferred.

What You’ll Do

Your day will be a mix of guiding campers through hands-on STEAM activities, exploring exhibits, leading games and songs, and keeping the energy high while making sure every camper feels included and supported.
Create a fun, supportive, and “campy” environment where kids feel happy and included.
Be a positive role model and help create a safe, welcoming space for all campers, including neurodivergent kids.
Help keep camp spaces clean and organized.
Interact with families and provide a friendly, helpful experience.
Guide a group of campers through their daily schedule and activities.

Working Environment

AMOS is fast-paced high-energy environment. Team members must regularly lift and /or move up to 40 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, team members are regularly required to stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to manipulate objects, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Also regularly required to talk and hear while performing the functions of this job.  Punctuality and reliability are essential.

Compensation: $17-$18 per hour

Job Term: Temporary. Camp runs for 8 weeks and each counselor is expected to commit to working at least 5 of the 8 weeks.

Expected hours: 32 – 38 per week

Work Days: Monday to Friday

Work Hours: 6.5-8 hours/day, between 8:00 am and 5:30 pm

Work Location: In person at Asheville Museum of Science, 43 Patton Ave., Asheville, NC

Job Type: Temporary

Pay: $17.00 – $18.00 per hour
