Pay: $17-$20 /hour
Position Type: Part Time with Full-Time Option Seasonally
Typical Schedule: Friday–Monday (average; days may vary and be intermittent)
Hours: 32 hours/week, typically 4 days
Reports to: Guest Experience Manager / Executive Director
Provides Leadership for: Guest Experience Associates; coordinates volunteers and interns

Explore, Play, and Learn! The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) is a growing local science museum with interactive, hands-on exhibits for science lovers of all ages. We are Western North Carolina’s home for experiential science learning, discovery, and exploration. Young learners ages 3–12 especially enjoy our exhibits and programs that strive to spark the imagination, fuel a passion for discovery and experimentation, and foster lifelong curiosity.

AMOS is an active, bustling workplace with a moderate-to-loud noise level, where flexibility, energy, and collaboration are essential. Team members must be comfortable engaging with children and families, standing for extended periods, and working in a fast-paced, guest-centered environment. Employees may be required to lift and/or move up to 40 lbs, bend, reach, and maintain a professional and positive presence on the museum floor.

Position Summary

The Visitor Services Coordinator– Weekend Lead plays a vital role in ensuring that every visitor to AMOS has a welcoming, engaging, and safe experience. This is a forward-facing, guest-centered role that combines admissions, membership, shop operations, and volunteer coordination with leadership responsibilities on weekends, when the Lead serves as the acting manager on duty.

Core Functions

Weekend Leadership: Serve as the museum’s manager on duty during most weekends, responsible for front-line operations, staff oversight, guest relations, and safety procedures.
Admissions & Membership: Provide admissions desk support, process daily ticketing and membership sales, promote membership benefits, and ensure accurate financial handling.
Shop Leadership: Support retail operations including inventory tracking, vendor ordering, merchandise display creation, and shop reporting.
Volunteer & Intern Coordination: Manage the museum’s intern and volunteer program, including recruitment, placement, supervision, mentorship, and program tracking.
Guest Engagement & Programming: Facilitate guest experiences such as STEAM activities, birthday parties, and museum events. Provide enthusiastic, positive interactions that enhance the visitor experience.
Exhibit & Facility Monitoring: Conduct exhibit checks, address or report issues, support cleaning/sanitization, and ensure public spaces remain safe, functional, and welcoming.
Team Culture: Actively contribute to a collaborative, supportive team environment by modeling professionalism, adaptability, and a guest-first approach.

 

Qualifications

  • Education: A degree is not required. Equivalent experience in customer service, hospitality, museums, or nonprofit visitor services will be considered.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years in guest-facing or visitor experience roles; leadership or coordination experience strongly preferred.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Ability to lead teams of staff, volunteers, and interns.
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and POS systems.
  • Ability to accurately handle cash, follow financial procedures and create basic financial reports.
  • Schedule: Ability to work most weekends, open holidays, and occasional evenings.
