Step inside one of Western North Carolina's largest gem and mineral collections. Our extensive exhibit showcases the impressive Colburn Collection, Burnham S. Colburn's (1872-1959) wide array of gems and minerals that highlight the geologic diversity of Appalachia and abroad. The Gem and Mineral Hall also features the Sondley Collection, named after Asheville native Foster Sondley (1857-1931). On loan from Buncombe County Special Collections, the Sondley pieces give visitors a rare opportunity to view native gems set in men's jewelry from Asheville's Gilded Age and Progressive Era.
