Judith Cheney

Judith has greeted visitors since 2001 to our parent museum, the Colburn Gem and Mineral Museum, later the Colburn Earth Science Museum, and now reborn as AMOS, with a sidewalk downtown presence and many more visitors for her to welcome.

Judith is an alumna of Northwestern University with a degree in French and a Diplôme d’Études from the Sorbonne, University of Paris. She worked for some years as a fashion illustrator and as a features writer and fashion editor for The Milwaukee Sentinel and The Chicago Daily News. For many years she wrote and illustrated nature columns for the Palm Beach Post, The delray Beach News Journal and This Week Magazine in Asheville. She exhibited her paintings in Chicago, Palm Beach & here at the Asheville Art Museum, Blue Spiral 1, and other venues in Western North Carolina. She has volunteered with NC Art in the Schools and taught art classes at Opportunity House, Hendersonville, and UNC-‘s Center for Creative Retirement, now Ollie.  Her son, Phil Cheney, is also an artist in Asheville.

Judith enjoys her friends, family and neighbors, reads, gardens, continues to paint and draw, and lives with two cats, Ginger and Charlie, who often sit briefly for their portraits.
