Explore, Play, and Learn! The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) is a growing
local science museum with interactive, hands-on exhibits for science lovers of all
ages! We are Western North Carolina’s home for experiential science learning,
discovery, and exploration. Young learners ages 5-11 will especially enjoy our
exhibits and programs that strive to spark the imagination, fuel a passion for
discovery and experimentation, and foster lifelong curiosity.
Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) offers one-week, full-day, hands-on science
camps for children in grade K-5, that run June 16-August 8 at the museum. Camps
are not offered the day of July 4. Camps include STEAM lessons and activities, field
trips (within walking distance of the museum), and exhibit floor free play. Grades
K-2 themes include Dino Digs, Space Explorers, Tinker Lab, Animals, Plants & You,
Minor Miners, and Art of Science. Themes for grades 3-5 include Time Travelers,
Space Explorers, Spy Kids, Life on Earth, Art of Science, and Rock Hounds.
General Job/Position Summary:
Summer Camp Counselors are integral members of our informal education team,
primarily serving grades K-5. Essential overall duties and responsibilities include
the following, however other duties may be assigned.
This position is typically Monday-Friday.
Works together with the AMOS summer camp team creating and providing
hands-on, informal science learning activities and summer camp fun (90%).
Acts as a summer camp counselor, leading campers, following AMOS’ best
camp practices.
Helps to prepare and present pre-developed programs for groups of
children.
Acts as a point of contact for parents and educators.
Maintain the safety and well-being of campers in their care.
Helps with after-care programs as scheduled.
Communicates needs to AMOS Camp Coordinator.
Works as a member of the larger AMOS team (10%).
Creates and consults with team on new ideas and solutions, showing
excitement when asked to lead initiatives.
Actively participates in staff and planning/training meetings.
Represent the museum in a professional manner during interactions and
while out on the Museum floor
Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of

Education/Experience:
Must have a high school degree, or previous work experience, previous
camp experience preferred.
Candidate must be able to spend the day actively engaging the campers
following pre-written outlines.
Experience working with children.
Interest in informal science discovery.
Ability to work well with others.
Ability to communicate an enthusiasm for science to children.
Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure with a positive attitude
and creative problem-solving skills.
Must be able to be on their feet for up to 6 hours at a time, walk distances of
up to one mile over varying terrains, and be able to lift 25 pounds.
Ability to work outside in heat and humidity; some camps occur in an
outdoor classroom and many camps spend time outdoors.
CPR and First Aid certified preferred.

Minimally, should have knowledge of Microsoft office, word processing and

Working Environment:
AMOS is an active, bustling environment with a moderate to loud noise
environment. Team members must regularly lift and /or move up to 40 pounds.
While performing the duties of this job, team members are regularly required to
stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to manipulate objects, handle, or
feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Also regularly
required to talk and hear while performing the functions of this job. Team
members must arrive to work on time.
