SUMMARY:Gear Up: The Science of Bikes
DESCRIPTION:GEAR UP: The Science of Bikes is a combination of interactive stations and displays encouraging exploration and discovery centered around the history\, design\, and engineering of the bicycle. \nThe invention of the bicycle made an immediate impact on society and personal mobility and helped to shape our culture. Like any great invention\, it has been upgraded and adapted over the years. Because the bicycle is so commonplace\, it is easy to take for granted how it actually works.   \nAt GEAR UP\, visitors discover how the bicycle is an elegant example of basic science principles. They learn how bikes work; what the history/evolution of the bike is; the science and technology behind the machine; and how bikes have impacted our culture.   \nGEAR UP is a combination of interactive hands-on stations and a collection of over 14 vintage bicycles ranging from the Victorian-era Penny Farthing to customized lowriders\, big wheels\, and clown bikes.   \nVisitors can view the collection and engage with many fun interactive exhibits exploring forces and motion\, material science\, and engineering. Pedal a crank to generate power\, roll balls down a series of ramps\, mix colors\, etc.   \nLike the bicycle itself\, the exhibition has been designed to appeal to people of all ages and with diverse interests\, from STEM to design to history to art.

SUMMARY:STEAM Lab: Bump It! Set It! Spike It!
DESCRIPTION:March is here\, and Asheville is buzzing with high-energy action! As the Southern Conference (SoCon) volleyball frenzy sweeps through town\, we’re diving into the thrilling science behind the sport.\nJoin AMOS in the STEAM Lab this month and get ready to discover how our bodies move when we play. Ever wonder about the physics behind a perfectly aimed set\, the force behind a crushing spike\, or the body mechanics of a diving dig? From Newton’s Laws to mastering momentum\, we are uncovering the “how” behind the hits. Join us all month long to explore how science helps us play smarter\, jump higher\, and spike harder!\nLet’s get technical—and active—this March!

SUMMARY:Exploring Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Perspective \nAt this one-day collaborative workshop between the Asheville Art Museum and Asheville Museum of Science\, campers will observe and interpret the natural world from the microscopic to the landscape scale\, and practice using tools and techniques from microscopes to impressionistic landscape painting.  \nCampers who are currently in Third through Fifth Grades are eligible for this one-day workshop held on a teacher in-service day for Asheville City and Buncombe County Schools. Campers will spend half the day at the art museum and the other half at the science museum. At the art museum the campers will visit the galleries and create art in the Studio. At the science museum the campers will explore exhibits and make observations in the STEAM lab using microscopes and hand lenses.  \nCampers will be walked between the art museum at 2 South Pack Square and the science museum at 43 Patton Ave. Detailed drop off and pick up instructions will be emailed to you within a few days of the camp date. Aftercare is available at Asheville Museum of Science from 3:30 – 5:00 pm with separate registration. \nClick here to register>>> \n
