SUMMARY:Gear Up: The Science of Bikes
DESCRIPTION:GEAR UP: The Science of Bikes is a combination of interactive stations and displays encouraging exploration and discovery centered around the history\, design\, and engineering of the bicycle. \nThe invention of the bicycle made an immediate impact on society and personal mobility and helped to shape our culture. Like any great invention\, it has been upgraded and adapted over the years. Because the bicycle is so commonplace\, it is easy to take for granted how it actually works.   \nAt GEAR UP\, visitors discover how the bicycle is an elegant example of basic science principles. They learn how bikes work; what the history/evolution of the bike is; the science and technology behind the machine; and how bikes have impacted our culture.   \nGEAR UP is a combination of interactive hands-on stations and a collection of over 14 vintage bicycles ranging from the Victorian-era Penny Farthing to customized lowriders\, big wheels\, and clown bikes.   \nVisitors can view the collection and engage with many fun interactive exhibits exploring forces and motion\, material science\, and engineering. Pedal a crank to generate power\, roll balls down a series of ramps\, mix colors\, etc.   \nLike the bicycle itself\, the exhibition has been designed to appeal to people of all ages and with diverse interests\, from STEM to design to history to art.

SUMMARY:April in the STEAM Lab: Science Matters
DESCRIPTION:The North Carolina Science Festival (NCSciFest)\, presented by RTI International\, will return for its 16th year this April\, with the theme “Science Matters.” An initiative of Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, the festival highlights the essential role of science in everyday life and expands access to hands-on science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning opportunities. \nScience Matters Morehead director Todd Boyette said\, “The theme of Science Matters reflects how science touches every part of our daily lives in North Carolina\, from our communities and economy to our health and environment. Science absolutely matters\, and this is why we are excited to bring this event to the state once again in 2026.”    \nAMOS is excited to participate in NC SciFest this April with our STEAM Lab theme: Science Matters: Play and Create! We will have six space-themed games created by third grade students as part of Galaxy Games\, a partnership between Buncombe County Schools and Asheville Museum of Science.. Come play games\, learn about the solar system\, create your own game pieces\, and have a great time. Science Matters because it’s a great way to engage kids in learning\, strengthen literacy\, and develop skills in working together. See you in the STEAM Lab this April!
