Science Pub: Visualizing Sound, the Physics of Music

Join Michael J. Ruiz, Ph.D., Professor of Physics at UNC Asheville for a lecture about visualizing sound. Sound will be discussed in terms of its component frequencies with spectrogram displays. Visual representation of the sounds of musical instruments, the human voice, sirens, singing birds, barking dogs, a roaring lion, a jet engine, and other examples will be provided. Audience members will be invited to make spectrograms of their own sounds.
