Saturday STEAM: Salamanders!

March 9, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join us in the STEM lab between 2:00pm-4:00pm to study living salamanders with UNCA Biology professor Dr. Rebecca Hale.

Amphibians are important occupants of seasonal wetlands in North Carolina. Although most of us know the life cycle of frogs and toads and how they use wetlands, less familiar are the salamanders that are found in these same ponds. Right now, wetlands in western North Carolina are teeming with eggs of spotted salamanders, larvae of marbled salamanders, and wood frog tadpoles. We will take a look at embryos, larvae, and adult salamanders of our local wetlands and compare their life cycle to the more familiar life cycle of frogs and toads.
