Saturday STEAM: Meet the Artist

April 21 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Saturday STEAM: Advance Artist April Flanders discussing invasive species through art

MEET THE ARTIST: April Flanders

Meet the artist, April Flanders, at 1:00pm in the Asheville Museum of Science for a conversation about her permanent installation Advance. She will discuss how and why she made the piece and how each of us can combat invasive plants and animals in our own backyard. Then join her in the STEM lab anytime between 1:30-4:00pm for a live, hands-on, art printing event. All participants will make their very own plant and animal screenprints, while learning about invasive species in our region.  Advance addresses the global nature of the problem of invasive species. The piece, created by artist April Flanders represents 77 different animal species invasive to North America and Hawaii. To create the piece, the artist collected plants invasive to the Appalachian region, and used these to print brightly colored sheets of printmaking paper using a layered monotype process. She then created groupings of each animal using traditional paper-cutting techniques.
